The challenges we work to change
Drought and water scarcity
Ajmer, like many districts of Rajasthan, is rain-deficient, and the shortfall has worsened in recent years. The ground water table is steadily declining and drinking water has become a serious problem for people and cattle alike.
Livelihoods and migration
Most people depend on agriculture and animal husbandry. Without rain, both suffer. Economic hardship drives migration, which affects women and children and leads to an increase in child labour.
Social barriers
Child marriage, illiteracy and gender discrimination are common. Boys are favoured over girls in education and in many areas of life, and women have little say in decisions or in development activities.
Working across the village, not on one issue
Since its inception GMVS has worked to overcome these problems and to reduce discrimination. With its experienced workers it works in education, health, women’s development, child development, elimination of child labour, girls’ education, environment, improved agriculture, drought mitigation and employment generation.
In this effort GMVS receives financial and technical support from various organisations.
